TDWG Endorses the Principles of the Conservation Commons

By: Lee Belbin

The TDWG Executive Committee endorsed the Principles of the Conservation Commons in Bratislava in September - see http://www.conservationcommons.org/section.php?section=member&langue=en. This decision was prompted by the two meetings lead this year by IUCN with the Conservation Commons about the need for the development of standards for species conservation status, area conservation status and conservation status in literature (see http://www.tdwg.org/about-tdwg/news/article/lee-attends-iucn-oasis-workshop-on-biodiversity-standards/ and http://www.tdwg.org/about-tdwg/news/article/iucn-oasis-second-workshop-on-biodiversity-standards/).

TDWG’s stand on open access to and sharing of information parallels the Conservation Commons.  TDWG had to consider issues of copyright and acknowledgement in relation to the new Standards Specification (which is soon open for public review). TDWG standards are documents so it was concluded that Creative Commons CC-BY license would apply to TDWG outcomes by default. Other arrangements may be appropriate in certain circumstances. The TDWG Infrastructure Project has recently used the GPL3 license to apply to software and associated documentation produced under contract.  GPL3 will be unlikely to apply in most situations in TDWG.

It is hoped that TDWG may help Conservation Commons members better understand the need for sharing biodiversity data, using TDWG’s standards. We would also appreciate their support in helping us develop more effective standards.
